Deputy injured in hatchet attack

CHEBOYGAN – The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office requested the Michigan State Police (MSP) investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred in Afton yesterday.

On Thursday, February 10, 2022, at approximately 11:52 a.m. deputies from the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence on Afton Road in Ellis Township for a welfare check of a woman.

The woman had contacted family members and stated she was in trouble and needed immediate help. Deputies responded to the home and as they were making entry, 32-year-old Aian Thomas Tracy, attacked the deputies with a hatchet. Shots were fired and Tracy was later pronounced dead at the scene. One deputy was treated for non-life-threatening injuries after being struck with the hatchet.

Detectives and troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gaylord Post, MSP Seventh District Headquarters, and MSP Grayling Crime Lab responded to the scene. Cheboygan Life Support Systems were also at the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled this morning in Grand Rapids and the investigation continues.
