Two members of same family die in I-75 traffic accident

Father watched as vehicle crossed media and hit car his daughters were driving in

GAYLORD – On Sunday, June 20, 2021 at approximately 2:35 p.m. troopers from the
Michigan State Police (MSP) Gaylord Post responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on northbound I-75 near S Old 27 Highway in Bagley Township.

It was reported that a 2006 Mercury Montego driven by a 21-year-old Harrison woman was traveling southbound on I-75 and was attempting to avoid a collision when it ran off the roadway, crossed the median and struck an oncoming vehicle traveling northbound.

The northbound vehicle, a 2014 Toyota Prius driven by a 22-year-old woman from Rochester, had two passengers, 22-year-old Kaele Lynn Polzin and 16-year-old Sara Summerlyn Polzin from Richmond, who were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota was transported to Otsego Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the Mercury was transported to Otsego Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to Traverse City Munson Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The father of the two victims was traveling in a separate vehicle in front of them and stated they were on their way to a family vacation. He saw the vehicle cross the median and strike the vehicle occupied by his daughters.

The crash remains under investigation.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Otsego County EMS, conservation officers from the Department of Natural Resources, officers from the Gaylord Police Department, and deputies from the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office.
