Water testing sites installed by Village

ROSCOMMON – The Village of Roscommon Dept. of Public Works installed two direct water testing sites Monday, July 18.

The one shown here is at the corner of Division, State and South Fifth Streets, next to the Lions Club property. A second one was installed on George Street, behind the CRAF Center.

Public Works Director Dave Linderman said the two site connections will allow for direct withdrawal of water from the village underground water lines instead of drawing water from faucets in public buildings like the county courthouse or the CRAF Center. He pointed out that the problem with getting water samples from buildings is that the buildings’ water lines could contain bacteria, and thus not give an accurate reading during the tests performed at water testing laboratories.

The Village has chlorinated its water supply for about the past year and hopes to end that process in the near future. The problems began several years ago with a street, water and sewer rebuilding project on Second Street and George Streets and was followed by water line breaks in other parts of the village during an extremely cold winter.

Roscommon’s public water, before chlorination, won the best tasting water in Michigan on numerous occasions over the years and several years ago was judged the 4th best tasting water in the United States.
