Cats’ induct new members

HOUGHTON LAKE – Houghton Lake High School had its annual National Honor Society (NHS) induction ceremony March 14 and welcomed 30 new members, boosting the school’ numbers to more than 50.

‘This is an enormous amount of members and by far the most ever in this chapter,’ said Michelle Johnson, NHS advisor. ‘(I) couldn’t be more proud of (my) students.”

NHS was founded in 1921. Members are selected by four criteria that include leadership, character, scholarship and service.

Community service is important as well. So far this year, NHS has participated in Tip Up Town and has scheduled a spaghetti dinner for Logan Land on March 22. Johnson said they hope to raise enough money to help Land and his family with his medical expenses and to get him a prosthetic leg after having to have his leg amputated due to bone cancer.
