ROSCOMMON – The Fifth Annual Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee, Council #6593 was held Nov. 6 at their hall in Roscommon.

Preliminary spelldowns were held in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classes at Roscommon Elementary and the top three spellers from each grade participated in the Spelling Bee.

Participants from 4th grade were Aiyana Felver, Gavin Gross, and Nicholas Vaden. 5th grade participants were Matthew Haynie, Trayvin Guilfoil and Jacob Ziebell. 6th grade participants were Alex Thiel, Corbin Tyler, and Aubrey Henderson.

Three judges, Kelly Blanchett, Marcie Howey, and Don Croft were on hand to check the students’ spelling, while Greg Milne was Master of Ceremony.

Each student took turns walking to the microphone to spell a word. If it was misspelled, the student sat down back in the audience. When the competition was down to only two students left, the rules changed a little. When one student misspelled a word, the other student had to spell the same word correctly, then spell another correct word.

In the end, Nicholas Jaden won first place and two $10 McDonald gift certificates. Alex Thiel was runner up and won a $10 McDonald certificate. Both students are eligible to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee in Gaylord next January, with the top two spellers there moving on to the State Finals.

Last year, Roscommon 6th grader Josie Fairbanks was the State Champion speller.
