Food Pantry feeds 8,400 in 2016

HOUGHTON LAKE – The generous volunteers of Project HOPE of Roscommon County logged 3,592 hours, drove 13,280 miles to help feed 8,398 people among 3,667 families in 2016, according to the charity’ records.

It was also busy on several other fronts, including changing the name it does business under to the Roscommon County Food Pantry – so more people would recognize that its mission is to help feed hungry residents of the county. The Pantry also moved to a new location at 715 Loxley Road, Houghton Lake, in November so its clients – and volunteers – would have an easier time accessing the facility. It signed on 1,233 new clients in 2016.

Last January it elected a new board: President, Joshua Paiva, of Higgins Lake; Vice-President, Bill Cadieux, of Houghton Lake; Treasurer, Tom Pettit, of Houghton Lake; Secretary, Lori Roberts, of Houghton Lake; Trustees Bella Brandt, of Higgins Lake and Jo Ann Gave, of Roscommon.

The Food Pantry is a 501c3 organization that relies totally on donations and volunteers to help those in need. Volunteers unloaded eight large community vegetable trucks along with normal bi-monthly deliveries from the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. The charity also is grateful for the significant donations from various local businesses and church groups.

To donate or volunteer, contact Director LaWanda North at (989) 366-5120.
