ROSCOMMON–It’s a time for giving, and the students at Roscommon Area Public Schools took the time to give back to those in need.

The Student Council at the high school one again held a food drive as a competition between the classes. Each can of food, ham, or turkey, were assigned a point value. 15 points for a can of green beans, 200 for a turkey, and -5 for mac & cheese. Yes, negative points were awarded for any container of macaroni and cheese.

Students brought food into their homeroom each morning. Council members would gather the food and count up the points each day. Enterprising students would dump their macaroni and cheese boxes into competing teachers’ boxes, lowering their total for the day.

In the end, Mr. Hofer’ class won with over 24,000 points worth of food.

The middle school held the same type of competition at the same time. Doug Goulette was one of the teachers who helped manage their collection.

‘I estimate we collected 2 -+ pick-up trucks worth of food,’ Goulette said. ‘We had 71 pieces of meat– that broke a record this year. It’ the most we’ve ever collected.’

They also collected around $750 in cash to donate.

The class winners at the middle school were, 4th grade, Mrs. Halverson; 5th grade, Mrs. Kettlewell; 6thgrade, Mrs. Evans; and 7th grade, Mrs. Jacobs.

And in the elementary school, the 2nd grade classes held a food drive as a class project.

All the food collected was delivered to the Roscommon Lions Club for their food baskets they deliver each Christmas. According to Bill Curnalia the Lions Club has been providing food and gifts for families in the area for 42 years. Over 90 boxes were prepared this year.
