Fairview bee farmer generates buzz at Detroit Zoo

By Elana Warsen

Fairview’ own Applebee Farm made a special appearance downstate April 15-16. Richard Monk, owner of Applebee Farm and his wife, Gwen, ran a booth at the Detroit Zoo’ GreenFest. ‘We have never done anything this large,’ Monk said, of the invitation to promote bees and sell Applebee Farm honey and beeswax products at the zoo. ‘I feel honored, really.’

GreenFest was part of the Detroit Zoo’ Earth Day celebration, which aimed to educate zoo guests about environmental conservation. The Monks were one of several artists asked to provide ‘tips and goods for keeping our planet a healthy place to live.’ Visitors to the Applebee Farm booth received a hands-on education about beekeeping, including the chance to try beekeeping equipment such as a bee veil and an extractor.

Applebee Farm is located at 2064 Applebee Ln. in Fairview. For more information call Richard or Gwen Monk at 989-390-1853.
