GAYLORD — What started as a simple idea from a compassionate third grader at South Maple Elementary has grown into a powerful school-wide effort to support people experiencing homelessness.
Inspired to help, the eight-year-old student shared his idea with classmates: collect pillows and blankets for those in need. His friends immediately got on board, and together they decided to take action. Wanting to make an even bigger impact, the student reached out to the Michigan State Police for support. The State Trooper Outreach Partnership (S.T.O.P.) responded enthusiastically, contacting the school principal to help bring the vision to life.
From that partnership, the Share the Warmth Drive was born. The S.T.O.P. Gaylord Chapter donated $500 to support the project, and the third-grade class at South Maple led the way, collecting new pillows and blankets during the first week of May.
Their hard work paid off—students gathered 107 blankets, 65 pillows, 16 thermal blankets, and 20 rain ponchos. All items were donated to The Refuge of Otsego County to help individuals and families in need.
This heartwarming effort proves that even the youngest students can spark real change. With teamwork, kindness, and a little creativity, one great idea turned into a community-wide act of love.
