The Stone Crusher

FREDERIC- The Stone Crusher belonged to Frederic Township. The township built some of the road from Frederic to Grayling.

They used plane gravel but it would not pack. Now they use clay to pack down the gravel roads. They built the first mile of road from Frederic towards Maple Forest. Maple Forest hired the Stone Crusher to build a mile of road from town line to the tops of Knibbs Hill.

The entire Stone Crusher burned when Calahan’s Saloon, Barber Shop, a nice house, Town Hall, Brennan’s house and a meat market burned. The building in which the Stone Crusher was stored was in the back of the Town Hall. It was some fire! It burned more than two and a half blocks. This was in 1913 or 1914.
