Start with Essentials

All things around us are comprised of chemistry, and the chemistry of anything determines the function that it serves in existence.

Plants have their own chemistry that exists to protect them in nature.

Your garden can’t run to the drug store for medicine if it gets a pathogen from the environment.

But Mother Nature is smart- plants have their own essential oils that are comprised of chemistry that gives them protective, regenerative, restorative, microbe propelling, and health supporting properties.

If you’ve ever peeled an orange and inhaled the uplifting aroma of citrus on your hands, you’ve experienced essential oils.

With an ever-expanding bank of scientific research, these plant oils have been shown to support the body for many people in many ways.

Derived from bark, roots, leaves, flowers, fruits- all with varying chemistry dependent upon when the plant is harvested as well as what part of the plant is harvested- matter when looking at an essential oil to support the body. Cilantro and Coriander oils are from the same plant, the leaves, and seeds, respectively, and they differ in chemical components.

It is worth noting that there are contraindications as well as benefits. Some oils can affect blood pressure and medications and you should always have a conversation with your doctor about using them.

Essential oils are best initially enjoyed with someone who is experienced with them that can share basic safety. Oils are very potent-as a general rule unless you are working with specific knowledge, never put oils in the eyes, ears, or nose.

Learn about dilution and research and experience each of the ways to use oils- aromatically, topically, and internally.

In theme with the nature of this column, the responsibility and privilege are yours to decide to learn about and add this holistic resource to your life.
