Mohs surgeon joins comprehensive cancer care team

MIDLAND – Rémi Hamel, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, has joined the comprehensive cancer care team at MyMichigan Health. This team includes medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and specialized surgeons, as well as breast and lung health nurse navigators.

As a Mohs surgeon, Dr. Hamel has specialized training and expertise in treating skin cancers. Mohs surgery is the gold standard for many skin cancers as it provides the highest possible cure rate while ensuring the maximum preservation of normal skin.

Growing up an avid surfer in California, Dr. Hamel developed an interest in sun protection and skin cancer. “I value the ability to work with patients of all ages to help them keep their skin healthy over their lifetime,” he said.

Dr. Hamel’s goal is to provide the best care possible for each patient and to treat them as he would his own family. He wants patients to have the information and tools necessary to make well-informed decisions.

“I take the time to listen to each patient and prioritize safety and effectiveness,” said Dr. Hamel. “The surgery is often in a cosmetically sensitive area which may cause the patient additional anxiety. I strive to make their experience as comfortable as possible.”

Dr. Hamel shared that one of the most satisfying aspects of his work is coordinating treatments and promoting healthy habits to prevent additional cancers from developing. “Since procedures are done under local anesthesia, I can talk with my patients and get to know them,” he said.

Dr. Hamel received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. He completed a transitional year internship at Henry Ford Hospital and a dermatology residency at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Dr. Hamel completed his micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology fellowship at Houston Methodist Hospital. He is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology and a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and American College of Mohs Surgery.

In addition to his medical degree, Dr. Hamel holds a master’s degree in clarinet performance and music theory from the University of Michigan and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in clarinet performance from Michigan State University. He appreciates the artistry in both music and surgery.

Dr. Hamel has published articles in national and international journals and stays current with new techniques and advances in the Mohs surgery field.

In his spare time, Dr. Hamel enjoys cross-country skiing, cycling, surfing and music. He and his wife, Leslie, have two children.

Dr. Hamel welcomes new patients with a referral from a primary care provider or dermatologist to his office in the Heart and Vascular Center at 2660 W. Sugnet Road, on the campus of MyMichigan Medical Center Midland. Referral and appointments may be made by calling (989) 488-5010.
