Don’t let thunderstorms ruin your next kayak adventure

ELK RAPIDS – Interested in weather forecasting? Paddle Antrim is co-sponsoring a webinar for paddlers and boaters to attend a three-part series, “Weather Forecasting For On The Water.”

Regardless of whether a paddling adventure includes a lazy river or the open waters of the Great Lakes, a safe and comfortable outing requires a basic understanding of weather forecasting. Attendees will gain an understanding of basic weather principles and learn how to use a variety of forecasting resources.

The webinar is scheduled for Feb. 28, March 7 and 14 fro m7-8:30 p.m. Cost to attend is $60.

“Safety is a top priority for us at Paddle Antrim and we think this is a great opportunity for paddlers and boaters to learn some important basics to ensure safe and fun outings on our waterways,” said Deana Jerdee, executive director of Paddle Antrim.

Some of the topics will to be covered include: :

  • How to decode the confusing symbols, color shading, and meteorological shorthand on weather forecast maps.
  • The basics of weather forecasting apps.
  • The forces controlling the wind and wind forecasting.
  • Forecasting waves and precipitation.
  • The thunderstorm life-cycle and the conditions that lead to their development.
  • How to recognize the large and small-scale weather patterns that promote thunderstorm development.
