Torch Lake lumber cranes

TORCH LAKE – This photo was taken in the early 1900s – a steel crane of the Stearns Salt & Lumber Co., the logging company of Justus S. Stearns.

This photo was likely taken in Manistee or Mason County, some years after Stearns’ Siding [Post Office Dept. name was Bennett] disappeared. Between 1880 and 1899 Stearns built three saw mills in Lake County, between Baldwin and the Mason County line; all were destroyed by fire. By the time this photo was taken in the early 1900s, Stearns’ Siding had been reduced to only a few buildings.
