Heston students excel in Optimist contest

ST. HELEN- The St. Helen Optimists held its Second Annual Awards Ceremony/Christmas Party Dec. 1 to celebrate the International Essay Contest Club Level awards.

Students had to write a 700-800 word essay on the topic; ‘Chasing Optimism in the Face of Challenges’. They were awarded points on word count, format, and how well they handled the topic and other key areas. First, second, and third place medallions with small scholarships were presented as well as certificates for the top 10 essays. Fifteen essays were submitted.

Over 50 people came out and enjoyed fried chicken, a vast array of salads and desserts before the actual awards ceremony. Many families came out to support their essayists.

This year’ Third Place went to Savannah Cunningham, Second Place was Daniel Silva, and the First place award went to Morgan Ludwig. Ludwig’ essay will go on to the Michigan District finals to possibly win $2500 in scholarships. Results will be known in May.

‘Jordan couldn’t come out because she was ill, but I was going to make sure I was here to support my daughters. They both wrote essays this year,’ said mother Shawna Ludwig

‘I am so proud of our students and their essays,’ said Mrs. Johnson, the teacher who assisted the writers, ‘they really worked hard on this.’

Also honored was Mary Lowery of West Branch for Optimist of the Year for her dedication to the St. Helen club, and William Broadnax of St. Helen with the President’ Citation for going above and beyond the call for his club and community. Johnson and the Charlton Heston Parent Teacher Organization were awarded citations for their devoted support of the children in the community through Optimism.
