Students gaze at the stars

ROSCOMMON- Roscommon High School Physical Geology, and Physic students accompanied Mr. Eric Stenson and Mr. Chuck Schepke to the 14th Annual Great Lakes Star Gaze by Gladwin, MI on the evening of Sept. 30.

The Great Lakes Star Gaze is the largest amateur star party in Michigan put on by a local area astronomy club and Delta Community College. Typically there is a keynote speaker of notoriety in terms of astronomy for the Friday and Saturday night early evening presentations, before the rest of the night is staged for telescope viewing of planets, stars, and galaxies. This year the keynote speaker was Dr. Gerald Dobek, who is a professional astronomer and faculty instructor at Northwestern Community College (NMC). His research interests are in variable stars and dark material, which he conducts from his own research observatory northeast of Traverse City.

Dr. Gerald Dobek has republished and has written Edward Emerson Barnard (a pioneer astronomer from the early 1900’s) famous atlas “A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way” through Cambridge University press, which is number seven on the best sellers list for astronomy books in the nation. He did his presentation on his research for the book that Friday evening.

The evening was too rainy to do any viewing through telescopes. If it would have been nicer, the students would have been able to view through a 30 inch diameter telescope in which involves them climbing up a 10 foot ladder just to look through the eyepiece.
