ROSCOMMON – Over 30 businesses in the county have decorated the front of their buildings with scarecrows, thanks to an effort by the Higgins Lake-Roscommon Chamber of Commerce.
‘This is just something the Chamber has organized for the community to enjoy for fall,’ Cathy Boyle, Roscommon Chamber of Commerce Executive Director said.
According to Boyle the Scarecrows will be out from Oct. 1-16.
‘This way people can see the scarecrows through Homecoming, however, if the businesses want to display them longer they can,’ Boyle said.
The scarecrows will be judged by anonymous judges in categories including most creative, most beautiful, best representation of a business scarecrow, best fall theme and best theme of your choice. Winners will be announced at the Business 2 Business breakfast meeting Oct. 12.
The scarecrows are displayed throughout Roscommon County.
‘There is a map on our website and on facebook,’ Boyle said.
Boyle is excited because the whole community has ‘gone all out’.
‘The Warm Hugs Quilt Shop, for example, they made a scarecrow out of an ironing board,’ Boyle said.
‘Erine (Adams) and Michael (Wescoat) made the scarecrow in front of my shop,’ Mary Smith, owner of Roscommon Floral said.
‘We named him ‘Papa Scarecrow’ after Michael.
Roscommon Family Fare also had their own scarecrow exhibit, of a tall Scarecrow with a small scarecrow in a cart, both wearing Family Fare shirts.
‘Laura LaLaFleche, our Customer Service Manager made the Scarecrows,’ Assistant Manager Cathy Sopscak, said. ‘However, concerned customers have told me there is a child sitting alone outside in a cart!’
On Monday night a concerned customer rushed up to Sopscak.
‘She told me I had to do something; there was a child outside alone in a cart!’ Sopscak said. ‘It was just dark enough for her not to be able to tell the difference but it did my heart good to see someone supporting the children.’
