Gulliver’s entanglement

As he ambled down the street, friends observed his slowed gait and bowed shoulders. To them, he seemed as though he was bearing the weight of the world. Erased were the quick stride and bounce in his steps, accompanied with an effervescent smile.

What they could not see were the invisible strings, ropes, and chains that were attached to this person (similar to the observable restraints on the character Gulliver in the children’s story “Gulliver’s Travels”). The lengths were varied, but the cumulative effect on his life was considerable. Each chain signifies grief, guilt, inaction, negativity, perfectionism, resentment, rigidity, shame, controlling behavior, and other character defects. One of these may not have been significant enough to stifle movement, but the combination slowly encircled, then entrapped him both physically and emotionally.

Ever so slowly, he recognized and acknowledged the scale on how much his life has been impeded. This was the first step in addressing and overcoming these defects.

The following are a few suggestions that may aid in your personal evaluation.

  1. Conduct an inventory: Self-evaluate and list what are your personal fears and character faults. Honesty is paramount.
  1. Consult with other individuals: If you are stymied on the first suggestion, why not consult with others (friends, co-workers, family) in whom you trust? They may lift the veil and provide valuable insight.
  1. Formulate a plan: Developing a plan will begin after you have identified the negative emotions and behaviors that have gravely impacted and constrained you.  The plan could contain an analysis of the situation, the goal, and an assessment of what you need to do.
  1. Engage in ongoing re-evaluation: Once the plan has been formulated and implemented, the next step is continual monitoring of its progression or regression. This could be accomplished by utilizing a notebook, where you may document your observations on your personal growth.
  1. Seek professional consultation: If you are continually challenged and are struggling, then seeking professional consultation may be of benefit.
  1. Don’t forget the power of prayer: Throughout this process, praying and asking your higher power for help, insight, and guidance may also be a benefit.

Attempting to traverse life’s path while being emotionally restrained may be overwhelming. Recognizing your negative emotional traits and implementing a plan to overcome them affords one the opportunity to release emotional shackles and makes one’s journey in life more enjoyable and rewarding. I hope and pray in Jesus’ name that these possible suggestions might help.
