“View from The Comfy Chair”? “Smartphone wonders! “

“Smartphone wonders! “

I was soundly sleeping, and suddenly, I was abruptly woken by the alarm on my Smartphone!

The problem is I don’t remember setting the alarm. How does this happen?

How smart is my Smart Phone I wonder? Yes, I am guilty of putting my phone in my pants pocket, so I guess all of that jostling around could have set the alarm. I have, on occasion, “Butt Dialed,” a few people, as I hear someone talking out of my pocket. It is a little embarrassing, but chances are they have done the same thing.

If my Smart Phone is so smart, why do I keep on losing it, I wonder? At least twice a week, I wonder where my phone is. I usually have my wife call my cell phone as I wander around the house listening for its familiar ringing sound. I wonder why it gets lost. Is it hiding from me, hoping a smart person will find it? One time I turned the sound off and had to listen close as it vibrated. I also left it overnight at church one Sunday after services, what did it do all night?

It’s a little humbling to learn that my Smart Phone has over 100,000 times the computing power than the Apollo 11 Space flight. That is a wonder! Of course, NASA has never asked me to use my phone. With all this computing power, you would think I would be creating some new math, discovered a new planet, or at least learn to use the calendar on the phone. Something more than ordering a pizza or Chinese carryout.

Many people only use their Smartphone for making calls and checking emails. Some also use it to shop, surf social media, and pay all their bills. You can do almost anything on your Smart Phone that you can do on your computer. So, who needs a laptop anymore?

There are so many “Apps” that you can get for your Smart Phone. The average Smart Phone has between 60 and 90 apps installed on it; I wonder when they have the time to use them? For others, they have only what was on the phone the day they bought it.

According to ZDNet, the average American spends 5.4 hours a day on their phone. That’s almost 2,000 hours a year or 49.7 workweeks. No wonder volunteer hours are way down for many charitable organizations. How much productivity is lost in the workplace? How much family time suffers due to phone addiction? We all have been out to dinner and observed two people dinning and never looking up from their phones. Smartphones are a great addition to our personal technology, increases our safety, and the ability to communicate from just about anywhere. I just wonder if they are worth the expensive price tag!
