NORTHERN MICHIGAN — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced today that the Michigan Department of Transportation will launch more than $46 million in road and bridge repair projects this week in Cheboygan, Crawford, Genesee, Grand Traverse, Ingham, Marquette and Wexford counties. The projects are expected to support more than 550 jobs.
The governor also renewed her call for a long-term road funding plan to “fix the damn roads” and sustain infrastructure-related employment across the state.
“Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, lower the cost of auto repairs, improve motorist safety, and create good-paying jobs that don’t require a college degree,” Whitmer said. “By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired, or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges.
“But our work is not done, and thousands of good-paying jobs are at stake if we don’t get a long-term road funding solution for Michigan. Let’s build on our momentum and pass a bipartisan, long-term local road funding plan so we can keep fixing the damn roads and building a bright future for Michigan.”
M-95 resurfacing near Republic
MDOT will invest about $1.5 million to resurface more than five miles of M-95 between Marquette County roads LLL and LLK near Republic.
The work will include asphalt resurfacing, guardrail upgrades, curb and gutter repairs, rumble strips and the new pavement markings.
The project is expected to support 14 jobs. It will begin Monday, Aug. 11, and finish in early September. Motorists should expect single-lane closures with traffic regulators. MDOT said the work will extend the road’s lifespan, improve ride quality and enhance safety.
Deck sealing on bridges in Northern Michigan
Another $483,000 will be invested to apply epoxy coating to nine bridge decks in Cheboygan, Wexford, Crawford and Grand Traverse counties.
The work will take place on I-75, Webb Road over I-75, US-131, M-93 and M-37. Construction starts Monday, Aug. 11, and is scheduled to end Friday, Sept. 19.
Traffic restrictions will vary: single-lane closures on I-75 and US-131, alternating traffic on M-93 and Webb Road, and single-lane closures with traffic shifts on M-37. MDOT said the project will extend the bridges’ service lives.
