HOUGHTON LAKE – The 45th annual Historical Village Days were held August 4 to 6. Friday night started off the festivities with the pig roast dinner. Saturday the games, music and demonstrations began.
There was vintage wrestling, black smith and wood carving demonstrations along with lots of free activities like grandmas dress up, candle making, face painting and paper printing. On Sunday there was a church service, pancake breakfast, more vintage wrestling and you could even have you vows renewed in the chapel.
Kelly and Toni Pursel, some of the vintage locals, shared their camping, cooking and fire starting techniques. They had three types of tents set up for presentation. the largest was considered a wall or lodge, next was the wedge tent which was capable of having a few people mainly for travel and the smallest was the diamond tent, which was a one man hunting tent.
The barber’ shop, general store and doctor’ office was the first strip mall in Houghton Lake according to the town barber/doctor, Dennis Dusseau. The barber often would assist the doctor during surgeries and amputations. This is why the barbers have the barber pole; the barber would hang his bloody rags on the pole outside the shop when he was open for business. To find out more about the Houghton Lake and surrounding areas, then make next year’ festivities a weekend plan for your family. Check out more information on www.houghtonlakehistory.com.
