Fall is in the air

By Joel Vernier

The days are getting shorter, instead of staying out past 9:30 p.m. and playing, walking, fishing, recreating until the sun goes down and realizing its almost 10:00 p.m. Sunset is now 7:45 p.m., by 8:00 p.m. its dark out!

The nights are getting cooler dipping down to the upper 40′ in the wee hours of the morning. When the sun goes down, the night air begins to chill it means that it is either another extreme game that the Michigan weather is playing or, dare I say it, fall is in the air!

Fall is my favorite season for napping! The mornings are cool, the afternoons are cool; in fact it’ almost always cool or cold or freezing! This means its time to go to the storage closet and get out the heavy throw blankets. Putting away the light summer throw blankets signals the end of another season. As I fold up my beach throw, with buckets of sand, crabs, and seahorses I feel a tear roll down my cheek. Next the BBQ themed throw, complete with dancing hotdogs, bouncing burgers and flying French fries.

Then my favorite picnic throw. It features an extra larger picnic basket; ‘Yogi Bear’ would love this. Napkins, salt and peppershakers, soda pop and even tiny brown ants embroidered on the blanket. They have cute little smiles and outfits on. Must be from an artist living in Denver, Colorado.

I love the change of seasons, but I also get a little feeling of sadness. The sadness is mixed with anticipation of the fall season. Out come my favorite fall throws; my Scary Pumpkin throw complete with bats flying around. I love my Fall Leaf Raking throw with leaves blowing around, rakes, twigs and a burning leaf pile! Next my Cider Mill throw featuring lots of apples, donuts, glasses of ciders, happy honey bees flying around caramel apples that are smiling at me. My doctor would not be smiling at me because of all the calories that are in that caramel apple. It also has a neat looking coffee stain, no wait, this is a real coffee stain, must have forgotten to wash this one before I put it away.

With this seasonal chore completed, I picked out the Fall Leaf throw, settled into my Comfy Chair, pulled up my ‘blanky’ around me, snuggled in and began to drift off to sleep. I was very tired after packing and unpacking several seasonal blankets and in a few moments I was in a deep, deep sleep. It actually felt very close to hibernating, but I had not taken in enough fat to keep me warm all night let alone all winter.

I feel a hand shaking my right shoulder; it was my wife; ‘Joel, Its dinner time!’

Oh well, if you’re going to get woken up, dinnertime is an excellent reason!

‘Remember, every day is a gift! Some are just a little more fun to open than others. – Joel
