Board workshop set for area nonprofits

GAYLORD – On Wednesday, Feb. 8 Huron Pines and Otsego County Community Foundation will be hosting their annual Board Basics Workshop from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the University Center in Gaylord. In its third year, this interactive learning opportunity has become a staple for cultivating a strong foundation and awareness for board member roles and responsibilities throughout our regional nonprofit community.

The 2017 Board Basics Workshop will be led by NorthSky Nonprofit Network’ dynamic Jen Booher, who brings a fresh perspective through her experience working with diverse organizations in the for-profit and non-profit sectors, like SAAB, Saturn and Ford motor companies, Detroit Zoological Society and Camp Daggett in Petoskey.

Participants can expect to gain a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities as board members as well as an increased awareness of what it means to be a highly effective board with the ability to truly support the work and mission of their nonprofit. Booher explains, ‘With most nonprofit organizations operating with limited resources, the role of nonprofit boards is becoming increasingly important. The discussion and networking opportunities built into the Board Basics program provides timely ideas and strong strategies for board members to meet challenges and experience success.’

Nonprofit organizations deliver needed services, protect the environment, nurture our culture through arts and education, give a voice to those who can’t speak for themselves and bring out the spirit of service in others by engaging community members in volunteerism.

‘We are so excited that through a partnership with Huron Pines and the interest of our local nonprofit network we are able to continue to provide this valuable learning opportunity,’ says Dana Bensinger, Executive Director of the Otsego County Community Foundation. ‘Our organizations know that helping to build capacity in this way only strengthens the services and opportunities available to our community.’

If you are a new board member, a board member taking on new leadership responsibilities, know someone who would be great board member or someone who is considering joining a nonprofit board in the future–this program is for you!

One goal for 2017′ event is to reach new board members’either in the area who have seen the impact of the training on people they serve with or members of organizations from outside Otsego County participate.

‘Past participants play a big role in making this event a success,’ said Abigail Ertel, Community Program Lead for Huron Pines. ‘Organizations in our community are seeing this workshop as a great way to provide new and prospective board members a strong introduction and skill building opportunity at the very beginning of the year. We see folks returning and bringing friends and fellow board members with them – we’re excited to see this trend continue in 2017!’ Board members for organizations outside of Otsego County are also welcome and encouraged to attend.

‘Huron Pines is fortunate to work with so many groups and organizations across Northeast Michigan,’ adds Ertel. ‘We hope that our partners from West Branch, Alpena, Grayling, Cheboygan and all points in between consider joining us.’

Tickets are $20 each, payable by cash or check at the door. To ensure there are enough materials for all participants, please RSVP by calling (989) 448-2293 ext. 21. Participants are asked to please arrive 15 minutes early to sign-in and have a chance to meet other attendees over coffee and light refreshments.
