PRUDENVILLE – Several Denton Township First Responders were honored recently for their life saving efforts.
According to the Denton Township Ambulance Service, on Aug. 14, EMS was dispatched to a local restaurant for a report of a choking individual. Denton A-1 arrived on scene within two minutes.
Paramedic Destyni Traver, EMT Eric Tiepel, and EMT Kaylie Moore immediately went to the patient, who was unable to speak, had turned blue, and had a blocked airway. Tiepel performed the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging three large pieces of meat from the patient’s airway.
The patient began breathing again, regained normal color, and was able to speak. They were transported to a local hospital and discharged the same day with no deficits.
On Nov. 5, Denton Township honored the crew with a Life Saving Award for their teamwork and quick response.
Chief Richard Dupon presented the award, saying, “There is no doubt without their quick thinking that the patient outcome could have been fatal.”
The quick actions of restaurant staff and bystanders also played a role in saving the patient’s life.
