M-35 roadwork in Menominee set to begin

MENOMINEE – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin a safety and resurfacing project on M-35 in Menominee County on June 2.

The project, located near Cedar River and Menominee, represents an investment of approximately $4.5 million. It will cover roughly 15 miles of work, including asphalt milling and resurfacing, applying a surface seal, trenching, installing centerline and shoulder rumble strips, adding shoulder gravel, and updating pavement markings. The work will take place on M-35 from Jimtown Road north to J.W. Wells State Park and from Dunkas Road north to the Delta County line.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the importance of infrastructure investment, stating, “Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school, and run errands safely. By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired, or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime.”

Construction is expected to be completed by mid-September 2025. During this time, motorists should anticipate single-lane closures controlled by a traffic regulator. The project is projected to support approximately 43 jobs, both directly and indirectly, based on economic modeling.

In addition to improving the road surface, the addition of wider shoulders is designed to enhance safety by providing drivers more space to recover and by offering safer conditions for pedestrians and bicyclists.
