NORTHERN MICHIGAN – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin road and bridge repair projects this week across several counties, including Mackinac, Iosco, Presque Isle, and Alpena.
“Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school, and run errands safely,” Whitmer said. “By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired, or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of local jobs without raising taxes by a dime.”
Mackinac County
MDOT is investing $2.5 million to rebuild the bridge and roadway on M-123 over Bissel Creek near Moran.
The project includes culvert replacement, drainage work, shoulder widening, and guardrail upgrades. One lane of alternating traffic will be maintained using signals and barriers. Work begins Tuesday, May 27, and will last through late October, supporting 24 jobs.
Iosco County
In Iosco County, MDOT will invest $900,020 to resurface 3.5 miles of M-65 from north of Pine Acres Road to south of Kings Corner Road near Hale.
Work includes milling, paving, crack treatment, and sealing. Starting May 27 and ending July 16, the project will involve single-lane closures during daylight hours and support eight jobs.
Presque Isle
In Presque Isle County, $825,773 will fund resurfacing of 9.8 miles on M-211 and M-68 near Onaway.
Construction starts May 27 and ends July 16, with shoulder and single-lane closures during daylight hours. This project will also support eight jobs.
Alpena County
In Alpena County, MDOT is investing $665,394 to chip seal and fog seal 3.7 miles of M-32 in two sections near Lachine. Work runs from May 27 through July 16, requiring shoulder and single-lane closures with traffic regulators. It is expected to support six jobs.
Each project will improve road safety and extend pavement life through structural upgrades and new markings, continuing the state’s push to modernize infrastructure and support local employment.
