Roscommon Co. collects hazardous waste materials

PRUDENVILLE – More than 480 Roscommon County residents brought items to the Roscommon County Road Commission in Prudenville at the June Hazardous Waste Collection.According to the surveys that were taken on-site that day, this represented over 500 households. The Roscommon Solid Waste Recycling Committee coordinates this event each spring and fall. It is staffed by mostly volunteers; which anyone is encouraged to help!

Items included: 13,741 pounds of electronics, 3,410 pounds of oil-based paints, 1,850 pounds of household batteries, 1,913 of vehicle batteries, 6,090 of solvents, 555 pounds of pesticides, 474 pounds of aerosols, 266 pounds of auto cleaning liquids, 179 pounds of acids/bases, 89 of cleaning liquids, 109 pounds of propane cylinders, 16 pounds of lamp ballasts, 302 pounds of florescent light bulbs, 48 pounds of needles/sharps, 199 pounds of pharmaceuticals, 12 pounds of mercury, 28 pounds of gas cylinders, 9 pounds of activated carbons and 237 pounds of fire extinguishers/smoke detectors. These items are all collected by a licensed environmental company that recycles or properly disposes of this waste.

Other items collected and properly recycled by local individuals or groups included: 327 tires, ammunition, cell phones, ink jet and toner cartridges, used motor oil and several commercial-sized bags of Styrofoam.

The major change in programming this year was that latex paint is no longer an acceptable item to recycle in Roscommon County. However, it can be disposed of with your regular garbage after it has dried up or solidified. (To further this process, ad sand, saw dust or kitty litter to the paint and leave the top off.)

The committee is now posting a ‘collection site plan’ to assist residents in loading their vehicle prior to the event.
