Bucks lose to league leading Beaverton

ROSCOMMON — Showing a little rust after a weather induced layoff the Roscommon boys basketball team got off to a sluggish start against first place Beaverton in a Jack Pine Conference game Friday, Jan. 20 and the Bucks never recovered from it in a 58-38 loss.

Beaverton thus remained unbeaten on the season in the JPC with a 6-0 record while the Beavers bumped their record to 8-1 overall. Roscommon dropped to 3-2 in the conference and 6-2 overall with the loss.

Kaleb Keipert finished with a double double scoring 13 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. He also added two blocked shots. Michael Treml contributed 12 points and six rebounds, Grant Smitz added six points, two rebounds and three assists.

“We played hard and continued to battle, but couldn’t slow Beaverton down,” Roscommon coach MJ Ewald said. “In the first half we got a double-digit deficit down to six but couldn’t get any closer. We continued to work throughout the game.

“Dane Smitz gave us some good minutes off the bench. He gave us a spark defensively. Jacob Sayad had some good plays in the post, too. We’ll use this game and continue to improve. The thing about Beaverton is that they make you pay for a missed blockout or defensive rotation. We have to get better at stopping the dribble drive and recovering out to players. We’ll get back at it in practice.”
