Lady Bucks entered Tuesday’s game on 3-game win streak

ROSCOMMON — Roscommon’s girls basketball team has put together a three-game winning streak following a 44-34 win over Sanford-Meridian at home on Thursday, Jan. 5 coming out of the Christmas break.

Prior to the holiday the Bucks had posted a 59-38 win over Farwell on Dec. 15 and a 46-31 victory over Whittmore-Prescott on Dec. 20. The improved their record to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Jack Pine Conference.

“They were some of the lesser teams, if you will, but those are the games you’re supposed to win,” Roscommon Coach Scott Mires said. “Two juniors, Emily Barnhart and Leah Wooten have really stepped up the last three games and elevated their games both offensively and defensively.

“A few seniors have kind of struggled scoring so it was nice to see those juniors step up and taken that kind of role.”

Especially considering the imposing stretch of games that is coming up for the Bucks, starting with Tuesday night’s conference clash with county rival Houghton Lake followed by a trip to Beaverton for their first game with the Lady Beavers on Friday, Jan. 12 and then a big non-conference home game with Lake City on Monday, Jan. 16.

Rosommon then faces rematches with Gladwin and Ogemaw Heights, two teams they lost to the first time around. So it was important the Bucks come out of the break and produce another positive result and go forward with some momentum.

“The next seven games will be a real test for us,” Coach Mires said. “Hopefully we can get three or four wins. We’ll see if we can put it all together as the season winds down and we look at the districts.

“Basically all of the games that we’ve lost besides Ogemaw where we just were flat the whole game and just didn’t compete the way I wanted to we’re competing in all the games. I think I have a good group of girls.’

Roscommon puts up a lot of shots every game.

“When we’re open we’re going to shoot,” Mires said “If we have an opportunit to take it to the hole we’re going to do it. We get a ton of shots off each game. We get enough shots off to win. We just have to improve our shooting percentages.”
