Grayling soccer tops Harbor Springs, 2-1 in season finale

HARBOR SPRINGS — It couldn’t have been better had it been scripted for Grayling’s boys soccer team. At least, in so far as head coach Andy Moore was concerned.

The Vikings brought the regular season, as well as the Lake Michigan Conference slate, to a close Thursday night with a hard fought, 2-1 victory over Harbor Springs.

Grayling improved to 11-4-2 overall and finished 8-4-1 in the conference, while Harbor Springs fell to 7-6-2 and 4-5-1 LMC. The Vikings are on a two-game winning streak and are 4-1 in their last five games.

Despite not being able to find the back of the net in the first half, the Vikings kept the Rams contained as well and the two teams battle to a scoreless tie through the first 40 minutes.

Logan Cobb, the Vikings’ goaltender, spent most of the time watching the defense work and only saw three shots the entire contest, finishing with just two saves.

Grayling scored its first goal 10 minutes into the second half on a nice setup from Anthony Harrington to Jacob Schade, who buried the shot in the net to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

With 15 minutes left in regulation, the Vikings tacked on their second goal on a ball from Eliot Boik to Schade that mirrored the play on the first goal to make it 2-0.

But the Vikings relaxed a little too much after that goal, and the Rams capitalized on the momentary letdown to score and cut the Grayling lead to one just two minutes later.

Grayling now prepare for its district opener at Boyne City next Wednesday night. The Vikings lost, 2-1 and tied, 1-1 against the Ramblers this season.
