Eighth tagged fish taken in HLATB contest

Houghton Lake – Gene Dull of St. Helen, and a lifelong angler of its lake, was out trolling with a friend on July 7, using crankbait near a weed bed, when he thought he snagged a weed. As he continued reeling in, he noticed he had a pike on the line.

‘Honestly, my buddy and I were just talking about the fishing contest,’ Dull said, ‘saying we never caught a tagged fish. When my friend saw the tag, he doubled over in laughter.’

Dull said the 20-inch pike ‘was a skinny one’ but he appreciated getting the $50 gas card and is excited about being in the contest for the drawing. He was hard to reach for comments as he was always out fishing.

His catch was verified at contest sponsor Lyman’ on the Lake where he received a $50 gas card for bringing the tag in.

Dull is now a contestant in April 2017 grand prize drawing at Spicer’ Boat City. The grand prize is $100,000 and Lund boat from Spicer’. There is a guaranteed major prize of $500 cash and $500 in prizes.

The second place prize is a Mark Martin Ice Fishing School valued at $500.

‘The contest is off to a great start,’ Dave Clouse, chairman of the Houghton Lake Area Tourism Bureau said. ‘We had a tagged fish caught on the first day and now we are already on number eight. We appreciate all the fishermen who have been tagging for us the past 11 years and are hoping someone wins the grand prize this year.’

Anglers can bring their tagged fish in for verification at Lyman’ and H&H Fireworks in Houghton Lake, as well as Korbinski’ Marine in Prudenville, West Shore Hardware at Higgins Lake, and Trail’ End Motel in St. Helen.

For more information on the contest, please contact the HLATB office at 1-989-422-2002, 1-800-676-5330 or email info@visithoughtonlake.com. Contest rules are found on www.visithoughtonlake.com.
