Family Fishing Fest highlights Summer Free Fishing Weekend

Michigan’s Other Great Lakes Family Fishing Fest has activities set at Higgins Lake, Houghton Lake and Lake St. Helen Saturday, June 11, to celebrate Summer Free Fishing Weekend.

The event coordinated by the Roscommon County Economic Development marketing committee is part of statewide effort to engage more people in fishing .

This Saturday fish with friends and family on any waters in Roscommon County and bring your catch to Lyon Township Park, Higgins Lake; South DNR boat launch, Houghton Lake; or Richfield Twp. boat launch, Lake St. Helen, for measuring and weighing. Prizes will be awarded to five adults and five youths for winning fish. There are activities and gift bags at all three locations. Fish any time but be sure to come to the sites between noon and 3 p.m. Prizes will be awarded at 3 p.m.

Even if you are not a fisherman, bring the family for the fun event. There will be a bounce house at Lyon Township, as well as a clown and fun and games.

Free fishing rods and tackle boxes will be given away, as well as many youth-oriented activities are set up at Houghton Lake.

Paddle Brave Canoe is appearing in St. Helen to offer tips on canoeing and kayaking. Families will enjoy all the fun and informative activities in place there.

The annual Summer Free Fishing Weekend was initiated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in 1986 and allows Michigan citizens and out-of-state visitors the opportunity to fish for free – without a fishing license. A Recreation Pass is not required for entrance to the boat launches and parks this weekend.

The Summer Free Fishing Weekend will occur Saturday, June 11 and Sunday, June 12. It is a wonderful way to kick-off summer! All fishing license fees will be waived those two days and participants may enjoy fishing for many species of fish. Please note all fishing regulations will still apply.
