OSCODA COUNTY– HeadWaters Land Conservancy is completing a two-year oak restoration project at Luneack Nature Preserve in Oscoda County, revitalizing one of northern Michigan’s rarest ecosystems. Supported by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Habitat Grant Program and the Woollam Foundation, the effort focuses on restoring oak-pine barrens and improving food and shelter for local wildlife.
Once common across the region, oak-pine barrens now face threats from invasive pests, disease, and deer over browsing. “These ecosystems are home to species that rely on oak trees and open savanna conditions,” said Julie Rubsam, Executive Director of HeadWaters. “With our older oaks declining, we needed to act to ensure the next generation can thrive.”
Over the course of the project, more than 11,000 white and bur oaks, pines, and native shrubs such as hazelnut and serviceberry were planted. Bird, owl, and bat boxes were also installed to provide immediate nesting and roosting sites for wildlife.
“Restoring oak-pine barrens is about rebuilding resilience into the landscape,” said Dianne Farner, Deputy Director. “This work helps sustain wildlife and preserve an increasingly rare habitat.”
Luneack Nature Preserve spans nearly 600 acres and features five miles of public trails around Little Ward Lake for hiking, birdwatching, and nature exploration. The project reflects HeadWaters’ broader commitment to land stewardship and ecological resilience across northeast Michigan.
