Ogemaw Club clears the snow for riders from across state

By Christine Swiderski

While many of us prepare our gardens to sleep till next spring, Ogemaw Hills Snowmobile Club is preparing more than 100 miles of trails for the upcoming winter sport.

A scythe that reaches 18 feet in the air trims back the branches while volunteers pick up the debris and drag it off the trails.

‘ The weekend after hunting season they will be cutting and splitting wood for the warming sheds along the trails,’ said Club Secretary Jim Kelts.

Last season club members spent more than 1,000 volunteer hours brushing, signing and grading trails. That was prior to the trails officially opening on Dec. 1.

Next to golf, snowmobiling is the second most popular sport in Michigan.

Upcoming events:
Dec. 3 – 8 am. – Snowmobile safety course is available for those 12 years of age but less than 17 years of age. To preregister Call Jim Kelts 989-473-3062
Jan. 21: OHSC will be celebrating their 49th Anniversary. This event will be featuring the 5th Annual Vintage snowmobile show 10 am. to 4 p.m.
