REGION– One of Michigan’s most scenic waterfalls will be off-limits for much of the year as Michigan Department of Natural Resources temporarily closes Agate Falls Scenic Site in the western Upper Peninsula through late fall for major bridge repairs and improvements. The popular destination, known for hiking, fishing and breathtaking waterfall views, is expected to reopen by Nov. 1, 2026.
The $1.6 million project includes repairs to the site’s trestle bridge and a reroute of a 4.6-mile section of the ORV SB Route. Riders will need to use an 18.6-mile detour until construction is complete.
Located along the middle branch of the Ontonagon River, Agate Falls is famous for its nearly 40-foot cascading sandstone falls and scenic half-mile trail leading to an observation platform. Visitors are encouraged to check Michigan DNR closure updates before traveling.
