DNR seeks leads in Montmorency County elk poaching

NORTHERN MI–Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers are seeking the public’ help in their investigation of an illegally killed elk in Montmorency County on or about Christmas Day.

The incident occurred on Black River Road near Blue Lakes Road in Montmorency Township. The elk apparently was shot while standing next to the road. It then was partially field dressed and loaded into a vehicle.

Officers have collected evidence at the scene and are seeking additional leads.

Anyone with information on this or other poaching incidents is asked to call the Report All Poaching hotline at 1-800-292-7800. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.

Elk hunting rules and regulations are available on the DNR website under Hunting and Trapping.

Michigan conservation officers are fully commissioned state peace officers who provide natural resources protection, ensure recreational safety and protect citizens by providing general law enforcement duties and lifesaving operations in the communities they serve.
