HOUGHTON LAKE’tanley Sutherland of Howell and Houghton Lake was fishing on Houghton Lake July 2 when he landed a tagged walleye in the 2016-17 Houghton Lake Area Tourism Bureau’ Catch Us If You Can Fishing contest.
Sutherland has been fishing Houghton Lake for 62 years and this is the first tagged fish he caught.
‘I was really excited to land the 16-inch tagged walleye,’ Sutherland said, ‘almost as excited as I was when I caught a 25 and one-half inch walleye the week before.’
His catch was verified at contest sponsor Lyman’ on the Lake where he received a $50 gas card for bringing the tagged fish in.
Sutherland is entered in the April 2017 grand prize drawing at Spicer’ Boat City in Houghton Lake. The grand prize is $100,000 and Lund boat from Spicer’. There is a guaranteed major prize of $500 cash and $500 in prizes.
The second place prize is a Mark Martin Ice Fishing School valued at $500.
There are more than 200 fish tagged in Michigan’ Other Great Lakes (Houghton Lake, Higgins Lake and Lake St. Helen). The 11th annual contest runs from June 1 to March 15, 2017.
Anglers can bring their tagged fish in for verification at Lyman’ and H&H Fireworks in Houghton Lake, as well as Korbinski’ Marine in Prudenville, West Higgins Lake Hardware at Higgins Lake, and Trail’ End Motel in St. Helen.
