Lorine Benavides was born in Marlin, Texas on February 18, 1932 to Maria de Jesus Deleon and Jose Martinez. She grew up in Austin and lived in East Austin as a young girl. She enjoyed walking downtown and to the capital as a teenager with friends.
Lorine loved buying gifts and spending time with her younger siblings and her mom. Easter Sunday was so special to her. Lorine worked at Seton Hospital as a Nurse Aide. That is where she met her future husband Raul (Roy). He soon left for the Army but a few years later they were going on a group date and that’s when they started dating. Roy had an old car when they were dating and Lorine would tell him not to park in the front of the church.
They wed in May of 1964 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Austin. Lorine wore a short wedding dress, which was the fashion at the time. Lorine worked at Seton Hospital for about 30 years. She loved taking care of her patients and making them feel better. She had a few other jobs but her favorite job was being grandma and taking care of her two grandkids. As they got older, she loved to sneak them 20 dollar bills.
Lorine and Roy loved to go dancing and had their favorite bands that they followed, all around central Texas. Roy was also a member of the Pan Am Golf association and they really enjoyed attending golf tournaments in Texas, Kansas, Arizona and California. They had many fond memories with friends of those years. Later they enjoyed going on gambling trips with family. Lorine was a good cook, no one could make tortillas like she did. Her Spanish rice was always requested for family gatherings.
We are sad today but we know that Lorine is reunited in Heaven with Roy and family. Lorine is survived by her daughter Lisa Rankine, husband Andy, and her granddaughters Andrea and Lindsey. She is also survived by siblings Richard Martinez (Mary) Teresa Alvarez and Lulu Gonzales (Freddie) and many nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, and family friends who called by her nickname name of Nonie. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Helen Bernal, Jose Martinez Jr, Robert Martinez, Edward Martinez and Rachel Havens.
Lorine moved to Michigan in 2020 to be close to Lisa and Andy. We want to thank Katherine and the wonderful staff at the Hale Creek Manor for her care in the last few years. Mass Intention at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Austin on November 23 at 9:45 am.
