Following the service, John attended DeVry Technical Institute where he obtained a certificate in Radio Engineering. He then entered the workplace as a radio engineer for the City of Flint and spent 26 hardworking years with them until his retirement in 1988.

On November 3rd, 1973, he married the love of his life, Linda Flemington. The two of them had the opportunity to spend 49 amazing years together, raising a family of two children. John was a proud member of the Flint Corvette Club, and he really enjoyed the friendships and memories he made with everyone that was a part of the group. He also enjoyed woodcarving, listening to HAM Radio daily, being in nature, and spending quality time with his family and friends. In 1996, John and Linda relocated themselves to National City, Michigan, where they spent the remainder of their lives.
