Thela Ostling, 96, of Roscommon

Thela Catherine Ostling (nee Dean), age 96, of Roscommon, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, in Roscommon, Michigan.

Thela was born February 3, 1928, in Vermontville, Michigan, the daughter of Lauren and Alta (Crook) Dean. Her mother died at a young age and she spent much of her time with her maternal grandparents who helped to raise her. She spoke lovingly of them throughout her life. She was a graduate of Michigan State University. She married the love of her life, Ralphie, on December 21, 1947 in East Tawas, Michigan. She then had their only child, Kurt, whom she called Sonny, in September of 1952. Kurt was the absolute pride and joy of her life and they spoke often, prior to his death. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren then filled that role.

Thela was a voracious reader, lover of music, especially jazz, and a wonderful piano player which she got to share with her great grandson prior to her passing. She could converse on a multitude of subjects and was always learning. She was a woman before her time, showing remarkable strength and courage throughout her life.

Thela will be greatly missed by her family and so many friends. She is survived by her grandchildren, Dr. Lauren Ostling (Ben Pensak) and Erik Ostling of Cincinnati, OH; her great grandchildren, Mason and Elin; prior daughter-in-law, Debbie Ostling of Cincinnati, OH; nephew and niece, Jim and Pam Ostling of Roscommon, MI and numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Thela is preceded in death by her parents, Lauren and Alta Dean; grandparents, Arthur and Catherine “Mae” Crook, Charles and Florence Dean; husband, Ralph Ostling; son, Kurt Ostling (Judy Cunningham) and niece, Carole Ostling.

Thela’s family is planning a celebration of her life to take place in Roscommon later this summer. More details will be provided by the family at a later date.

If so desired, the family prefers memorial contributions be made in Thela’s name to the Ralph Ostling Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Roscommon County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 824, Roscommon, MI 48653.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Wagner and Walsh Funeral Directors, Roscommon.
