Shirley Wrubel, 89, of Mio

Shirley M. Wrubel, age 89, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2024, with her family by her side at her home in Mio, Michigan.

Shirley was born in Palms, Michigan on October 28, 1934, to Frank and Laura (Woolner) Klee. She met Irvin Wrubel, her high school sweetheart, and they married on April 30, 1955. Shirley led an extremely full and vivacious life. She was a world traveler; spreading her wisdom to each person she met. She was a talented seamstress, having worked many years creating hundreds of wedding and bridal gowns and other dresses for her family and friends. She altered each for a precise, individual fit with her talented, gifted hands. Shirley also created hundreds of quilts, stitched with love. She crocheted and knitted (with untiring fingers) many, many sweaters, slippers and blankets for babies, showers, graduations, and weddings. The tapestry of her life was quilted together with love in every stitch, carefully interlocking the skills of her artistic beauty and creativity to meet the personality of those around her. Her energy seemed unending, except for the catnaps! She was also famous for her cooking. Her love of creating delicious offerings for parties and gatherings of friends and families has been passed down to the next generation. “I have brought up 5 kids who are good cooks”, Shirley often bragged.

Shirley was a devout Catholic who shared her faith with others in many ways. She had taught CCD and was involved at St. Joseph Parish in Ypsilanti, MI  and  been a Faith Formation Instructor and Director at St. Mary Parish in Mio, where she and Irv were members since they moved to Mio. She also was active in the Knights of Columbus activities that were important to Irv and herself. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the Quilters guild sewing club, the CCW, TOPS, and 4-H.

Shirley is survived by her husband, the love of her life for almost 69 years, Irvin H. Wrubel; her children: Laurel M. (Patrick) Dobson of Elyria, OH; Mary Rose (Rob) Michalik of New Boston, MI; Joseph (Kimberly) Wrubel of Sellersburg, IN; Gerald (Lynn Grace) Wrubel of Ann Arbor, MI; and Ann (Rick) Sheffield of Ft. Stockton, TX; her sisters: Marge Parmann of Port Huron, MI and Beverly Klee of Portage, IN; her brothers: Harold Klee of Pinckney, MI; John Klee of Saline, MI; Don Klee of Bad Axe, MI; Richard Klee of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Robert Klee of Mindon, MI; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Frank & Laura Klee and her brother Frank Klee, Jr.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at the Lashley Funeral Home, Mio, Michigan from 1 – 4 PM and from 6 – 8 PM with a Vigil Prayer Service and Rosary beginning at 7 PM. Shirley will also lie in state on Monday, April 22, 2024, from 10 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, Mio, Michigan, with Rev. Santiago Hoyumpa as Celebrant. Interment will take place Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 2 PM at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
