May Evans, 91, of Alger

Our dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Madron “May” Larue Evans went home to the Lord on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. May was a loving, vibrant soul with a penchant for making her loved ones laugh with her silly songs, dances, and bedtime stories. Her laugh was as pure as her heart, which was open to anyone.

May was born to her father Guyther Ernest Fairley and mother Albertie “Bertie” (neé Black) on August 26, 1932, at their small rural home in Stone County, Mississippi. In April of 1954 May met her love, Elmor “Corky” Evans, in Biloxi, Mississippi. About a year later, April 16, 1955, they were married in the private home of the officiating preacher just a few blocks outside Gate 2 of Keesler Air Force Base, where Corky was stationed.

Corky and May moved to Michigan in 1955 with the intention of rooting and growing their new family, which would eventually include her beloved children Dan, Mark, and Kelly. Through the years, May went to and finished beauty school so she could cut and style hair while staying at home with her children, and later worked as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant, before retiring early to enjoy every moment with her family and loved ones.

In 1997, Corky and May settled into the Alger cabin they had slowly built together over the course of 28 years, finally making it their home.

May is preceded in death by her parents, siblings Nadine Fairley, Mary Virgene Cowert, Wynton Guyther Fairley, Myrna Loy Stanley, Malcolm Ernest Fairley, Arlon Guyther Fairley, Ernestine Lambert and her son, Dan Lavoy Evans.

She is survived by her husband, Corky and their children Mark Steven (Donna) Evans and Kelly Jean (Darryl) Evans-Bates, siblings Alberta Idonnis Ables, Clara Yvonne Ramos, Orville Glynn (Mary) Fairley, Rita Silverman, grandchildren Heather (Mike) Mitchell, Beth Evans, Ryan Evans, Caleb Evans, Martina Evans, Steven Evans, Jennifer (Josh) Jackson, Travis (Kay) Jackson, Kyle Jackson, Joel (Stephanie) Hardy, Joshua Hardy, and great-grandchildren Vincent Mitchell, Drake Mitchell, Sophia Mitchell, Olivia (Eric) Laich, Kylie Evans, Makayla Evans, Riley Jackson, Cooper Jackson, Brody Jackson, Kymber Newcomb, Aubrey Jackson, Andy Hardy, Drake Riling, Anakin Riling, and A.J. Hardy.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Calvary Baptist Church in West Branch. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. with a light lunch to follow. Burial will follow the luncheon at Alger Cemetery in Alger, MI. Dale Peters will officiate.
