Dick Mayer, 82, of Houghton Lake

Richard H. Mayer, known to his family and friends as “Dick,” “Rich” or “Richie” passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 26, 2023 after 82 years of full life.

Dick was born on March 25, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio to Herman and Helen (Baracskai) Mayer. Like his father, he was gifted at working with his hands and followed that interest into education as a Mechanical Engineer. He worked on complex hydraulic and pneumatic systems for Ford, Massey-Ferguson and Chrysler.

On February 15, 1969 Dick married Karen J. Moroz in Dearborn, Michigan. The couple raised Pam, Eric and Kirk in their Plymouth, Michigan home and filled their days with education, soccer, road trips and everything outdoors. Dick and Karen moved their empty nest to Houghton Lake in 2007 after retirement. Dick spent his time fishing, hunting and joined every card game he could find. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, taught hunting safety at Houghton Lake Sportsman’s Club, and pulled up to classic car shows in his blue 1978 Corvette with the T-tops off.

Dick is survived by his younger brother Jerry, loving wife of 54 years, Karen Mayer; children Pamala (Adam) Gandolfi, Eric (Danielle) Mayer and Kirk (Sophia Lee) Mayer as well as his grandchildren Austin & Sydney Gandolfi, Dillon & Samantha Mayer. Dick was preceded in death by his parents.
