Lorna Schlagel, 77, of Au Gres

Lorna Margaret Schlagel, age 77, was surrounded by her loving family when she went to rest in the arms of the Lord on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. Lorna was born on March 11, 1946 at the Omer Hospital in Omer, Michigan and lived her life as a dedicated follower of the Lord. Lorna was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Evelyn Schlagel and brother in-laws, Larry Daly, Bill Hiveley and Fred Williamson. Lorna is survived by her daughter, Shawn (Clint) Owen; grandchildren, John Nixon, Trent Owen, Kelsey Owen and grand-pup, Molly. She is also survived by her siblings; Dave Schlagel, Veronica Hiveley, Marilyn Williamson and Linda Daly, along with multiple generations of nieces and nephews. First and foremost, Lorna loved the Lord her God with all her heart. She was heavily involved with her church family at St. John Lutheran Church of Au Gres and led Vacation Bible School for many years. Lorna and her sisters played basketball in high school and made-up half of their womens’ softball league. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time at the annual Hiveley camping trip. Lorna’s greatest pride and joy was in her daughter Shawn and her family. Her grandson John was her absolute shining star. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, niece and nephews at community events and cheering them on at their sporting events. Lorna spent her career in IT at St. Joseph Hospital and the Standish Community Hospital. Lorna was a night owl that loved reading books late into the evening and even into the morning hours. This may be why she enjoyed sleeping in so much. Lorna may most commonly be known for her feisty wit and sarcasm, that no one was able to escape and that everyone secretly loved. A celebration of her life, officiated by Pastor Fred Cordts, will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, 206 N Court St, Au Gres, MI 48703 on Saturday, August 19, 2023. The family will receive visitors from 11am-12pm, funeral service to be held at 12pm with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Lorna’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital online or by mail, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
