Wanda Romancky, 99, of St. Helen

On March 26, 2023, at age 99, Wanda Alice Romancky passed away at MyMichigan Health in Midland, Michigan surrounded by her family.

Wanda was born on March 26, 1924, in Lincoln Park, Michigan to her proud parents Clarence and Carrie Starkey. The family settled in Wayne, Michigan where Wanda went to school and graduated in 1942 from Wayne High School. After graduating, she went to work at Detroit Edison as a secretary in the billing department. She worked there until 1954.

Her parents purchased property in Roscommon County, Michigan and started to build a cabin. This is where Wanda would meet George Romancky. When George heard from Wanda’s dad that he had a carpenter and she could really drive nails, George’s curiosity was sparked. He had to meet this nail driving lady.

After a 7-year romance, George and Wanda were married on June 5, 1954. Upon marriage, Wanda left her city life behind and became the wife of a farmer/ pulpwood cutter. Eventually they were blessed with three daughters.

Wanda had many things she enjoyed doing: canning, baking, cooking from scratch, growing a garden, growing house plants (Many of which are over 40 years old), upholstery, sewing, and farming. In the summer, Wanda helped with hay season by driving the tractor to collect the hay. When her children found baby chicks upstairs in the barn, she would grab her denim hat to put little chicks in, carried them with the hen; and would let them loose on the lower floor. She enjoyed cooking large meals for her extended family who would be at each other’s houses on weekends. Her sewing skills turned fabrics and hand-me-downs into beautiful cloths. When her daughters married, she skillfully made their bridesmaid dresses.

When George passed away after 49 years of marriage, she enjoyed traveling with her daughter to a variety of places throughout the US and Canada. At age 80, she went on her first airplane flight.

Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, sister and brother-in-law Farol and Wayne Williams.

Surviving her are daughters Karen (Frederick) Berg, Lucille (Dale) Eisbrenner, and Marcell Romancky. Grandchildren: Frederick (Amy) Berg II, Danielle (Nick) Burkett, Klaus (Chelsea) Eisbrenner, Andrea Eisbrenner, and Ethon (Mindy) Eisbrenner. Great grandchildren: Blake, McKenzie, Parker, Robert, and Alaine Eisbrenner. Sister-in-law Mary Romancky and brother-in-law Jack Myers. Many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Many thanks to the staff on the 4th and 5th floors at My Michigan Health Facility in Midland for their wonderful care of Wanda. The family appreciates their dedication to making her comfortable while she was in their care.

Donations can be made to My Michigan Health in Wanda Romancky’s name.
