Sylvia Tumath, 97, of Houghton Lake

Sylvia Carolyn Tumath passed away to her heavenly home on March 23, 2023 at Vista Springs Assisted Living in Wyoming, Michigan at the age of 97.

Sylvia was born February 28, 1926 in Detroit to Emma (Stein) and Jerome Kimble, Sr. She credited her Christian parents with instilling in her a strong faith in her Lord and Savior. Sylvia graduated from Western High School in 1944, and went on to work at G.M. Detroit Diesel as a secretary in the metallurgical department. This is where she met her future husband, Jack. They were married in 1948 and raised four children in Detroit. When Jack retired, they moved to Prudenville, Michigan where they lived for 30 years. Sylvia lived a life of service. When her children were in school, she did volunteer work and was even honored with the Detroit Heart of Gold award in 1970 given in recognition of her work with senior citizens in the Herman Gardens housing project. She was also very involved over the years at Grace Lutheran Church in Redford Township, Michigan where she taught Sunday school and VBS, and at St John Lutheran Church in Houghton Lake Michigan, where she taught VBS, and was a member of the Ladies Aid and LWML. No one was ever a stranger to Sylvia. She loved engaging with people wherever she went, always interested in their background, their lives, and families.

Sylvia was preceded in death by Jack, her beloved husband of 56 years; her parents; and her brothers Jerome Kimble Jr and Richard Kimble. She is survived by her brother Thomas (Lois) Kimble, sister Linda (Dick) Robertson; her cherished children Scott (Elleen) Tumath, Christine (Walt) Butkus, Beth (Mike) Ufford, and Steve (Amy) Tumath; grandchildren Joe, Jake (Tara), Emily (Jacob), and Jessica (Nathan); great grandchildren Brandon, Kendal, Teagan, Brock, Easton, and Olivia; and many dear nieces and nephews.

Sylvia was a wonderful companion, mother and friend, and was always there when needed. She will continue to smile, laugh and live in our hearts and memories forever.

A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at St John Lutheran Church in Houghton Lake with a visitation being held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations in Sylvia’s memory may be made to Spectrum Health Hospice and Palliative care: give.spectrumhealth.org/care; Grace Lutheran Church 150 50th St SW Wyoming, MI 49548; St John Lutheran Church 2888 W Houghton Lake Dr. Houghton Lake, MI 48629
