Mrs. Joan Karen Swayne, 79 of Atlanta, Michigan died suddenly on January 4, 2023 at Charlevoix Hospital in Charlevoix. She was welcomed into Heaven with open arms by both her parents and late daughter, Karen. Joan was born in Pontiac, Michigan on September 9, 1943 to the late, Sidney and Eva (Vickery) Cunningham. She married her husband, Thomas Swayne, on October 3, 1959 and together the couple celebrated 63 years of marriage before her passing. Joan resided with Tom in Atlanta for the last 30 years. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Lewiston. Before retirement, and moving to Atlanta, she worked for 45 years as a Sunday school teacher and bus worker for the church she attended. Joan was a beautiful soul who loved to spend time with her family and grandchildren. She is and will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her loving husband, Tom Swayne of Atlanta; children, Kim(Oliver) Araiza of West Union, West Virginia; Carletta (Ken) Motsinger of West Branch; Tom (Lynne) Swayne of Clarkston; Jennifer (Anderson) Zaldivar of Grand Blanc; sons-in-law, Jack Cole of Waterford and Scott Wiser of Grand Blanc; grandchildren, Oliver, Christina, Angela, Joel, Trevor, Joshua, Jacob, Dustin, Kendra, Sydney, Cole, Callie, Chip, K.K., Hampton, Audra, and Alex; 24 great-grandchildren; siblings, Judy McIntire of Comins; Jill Cady of Waterford; Sharon (Matt) Potes of Ann Arbor; Dale (Helen) Cunningham of Grand Blanc; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney and Eva Cunningham, and daughter, Karen.
Funeral services for Mrs. Swayne will take place at noon on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at the First Baptist Church, Lewiston; Pastor Tony Petronico officiating, alongside Joan’s son-in-law, Oliver Araiza. Visitation will take place from 11:00 AM until time of service with a luncheon following. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, 5560 County Road 612, Lewiston, Michigan 49756 in memory of Joan.
