Leonard Francis Mayhew, 86, of St. Helen

Leonard Francis Mayhew, age 86, passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at his home in St. Helen, MI. Sonny as he was affectionately known was born on Friday, October 5, 1934 to Leonard D. and Frances (Schlobohm) Mayhew in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Pershing High School in Detroit. Sonny served in the US Navy during the Korean War from 1951-1955. He was a hard worker, and held down many jobs through the years, but being a Railroad Engineer, and Body Repair Man for Wood Motors were his favorite. Sonny was a member of the St. Helen Catholic Church, life member of the KofC, American Legion Post #416 of St. Helen, and member of the West Branch Eagles. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and snowmobiling.

Sonny is survived by his children, Kathy (Mark) Schienle of Sterling Heights, Karen (Thomas) Justin of St. Helen, Leonard (David McClary ) Mayhew of Traverse City, along with his step children Gary, Dennis, Shelley, Laurie, Michele, Michael, Brian, and Penny. He has 5 grand children Stacy, Jason, Kristin, Austin, Maddy, and 7 great grand children Aiden, Lincoln, Allison, Jackson, Hudson, Jack and Kinsley. Also surviving is his sister Janine Bemis of South Carolina. He is preceded by his parents, spouses Frances, June, Geraldine, and siblings Marilyn, Kathleen, and Jerome.

Visitation for Sonny will begin on Monday, June 28, 2021 at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home, 702 N. St. Helen Road, St. Helen MI 48656 from 3-8PM. A KofC Rosary will be said Monday evening at the Funeral Home at 6:30pm. His funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at 11:00am at the St. Helen Catholic Church in St. Helen. Father Wayne Dziekan, and Sister Barbara Matievich, O.P. will officiate.

Memorial Contributions are suggested to the Heartland Hospice of West Branch, or the American Legion Post #416 of St. Helen.
