Stephen J. Staples, 75, Higgins Lake

Stephen J. Staples, father, friend and inveterate traveler, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at the age of 75 at Higgins Lake, Michigan.

Steve was born in Saginaw on Thursday, December 2, 1943, the son of Lynn and Virginia (Spray) Staples.  He graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1962, and from Michigan State University in 1966. He completed US Army Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 1967, served as a first lieutenant in Vietnam in 1967-68, and then taught at the Army Intelligence School at Fort Holabird, Maryland.  Steve moved to California in 1969 and graduated from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1976.

Steve was an avid skier and jogger in his earlier years. He enjoyed backpacking in the Sierra and hiking on Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California.  He resided for many years in Bolinas and Stinson Beach, California.  In more recent times, he traveled across the United States, visiting friends and relatives and spending time in Michigan, Montana and Arizona.

Steve will be greatly missed by family and friends.  He is survived by his children, Susanna M. Drennen (Samuel Drennen) of Athens, Georgia; and Todd S. Staples (Jody Kinsella Staples) of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Emma and James Drennen, and Johnny and Charlie Staples; his sister Nancy Volosin of Visalia, California, and his brother Guy Staples, of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Steve was predeceased by his parents, Virginia Spray Staples and Lynn W. Staples, of Saginaw, Michigan and predeceased by his brother, Mark W. Staples, of Wallingford, Pennsylvania.

Family and friends will gather for a Memorial Service on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 2:00 PM in front of the Montague cottage, Lakeside Camp, on Higgins Lake.

The family would prefer memorial contributions be made in Steve’s name to The Lakeside Memorial Fund, ? Cindy Torrence, 457 Old Stage Road, Roscommon, MI 48653.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Wagner and Walsh Funeral Directors, Roscommon.
