Perc Manhire, 93, of Higgins Lake

 

Perc Manhire, of Higgins Lake, died August 20, 2016 at the Brook of Roscommon Assisted Living at the age of 93. Interment will be at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. Walsh Funeral Home, Roscommon, handled arrangements.

He was born in Highland Park on November 23, 1922, the second of four sons to Fred and Beatrice Elizabeth (White) Manhire. He is survived by his older brother, Roy Manhire of Vanderbilt and youngest brother, Bruce Manhire (Mary) of Metamora. Younger brother Frederick Manhire of Prudenville died in 2013. Mr. Manhire met his wife, Mary Jane ‘Betty Lou’ Bell in 1940. They were married in Boston, MA in 1943 and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary five months before her death in 2014.

Mr. Manhire served in the United States Coast Guard in the North Atlantic during World War II. He was a Machinist Mate aboard the cutter U.S.S. Evergreen. After the war, the couple made their home in Royal Oak until retiring in 1980 to Lake Wales, FL, returning to Royal Oak in 1998 and relocating to Higgins Lake in 2012. Mr. Manhire retired from Chrysler Corporation working at the Highland Park Engineering offices and the Chelsea Proving Grounds. He travelled extensively from coast to coast for Chrysler throughout his 30 plus years.

He was an avid golfer, movie buff and had an enviable collection of record albums. As a teen, he was a decathlon athlete and lifeguard. He learned to water-ski in his 30′ and excelled. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, ballroom dancing and heading the dance committee at Saddlebag Lake Resort when they lived in Florida. Mr. Manhire will be remembered for his sense of humor, his mechanical and woodworking abilities, and an unabashed enthusiasm for Mickey Mouse and the Muppets.

Mr. Manhire’ older daughter, Marjorie McDaniel of Seattle, WA preceded him in death on July 20, 2016. In addition to his brothers, surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Chuck Brick of Higgins Lake; grandson Will (Erin) Brick of Berkley; granddaughter, Lauren (John) Brick – McCabe of Ferndale; great-granddaughters June Brick-McCabe and Paige Brick; son-in-law, Gary McDaniel, of Seattle, WA; sister-in-law, Patricia Bell of Royal Oak; and many nieces and nephews. Special friends include Bob (Helen) McDaniel of Las Vegas, NV, Ken (Pat) Birk of Mesa, AZ and Ron (Linda) McDaniel of Austin, TX.

The family expressed its appreciation to the loving, caring staff and friends at the Brook of Roscommon Assisted Living. Memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross, ‘Where It Is Needed Most Fund’, PO Box 37839, Boone, IA 50037.
